The book's title is an accurate description of what it's like.....
When I first read this book, my dad was in early stages and much of it wasn't applicable. Also, I wasn't relating to many people with Alzheimers, only my dad. A year later, Holy Toledo! Tips in this book helped me immensely! I am very grateful that I read it. My dad, who I so loved, was really still in there. It did take patience, an open ear, mind and heart, and some creative sleuthing to find him and relate to him. This book helped me to do that. I can't emphasize enough how important that is, if you love someone who is struggling with dementia. Because he/she doesn't know your name, that does Not mean he doesn't know who you are. It may be the hardest road you'll ever walk with someone you love. The author gives some great insights on how to listen differently and hence find some meaning in what that person is saying. Those magic moments along the way helped me thru.....A true gift to your loved one and yourself. Well worth the price.

Superb book - indispensable if you have a loved one with dementia
Judith London has done a wonderful service to those of us with loved ones who suffer from dementia. This book is compassionate, wise, and very practical. Reading poignant real life stories of people with whom Judith has worked over the years, and seeing how often they react so positively to her empathetic way of interacting with them was heart rending and full of hope at the same time. The "tools" which form the other part of the book are wonderful when you feel lost and don't know what to say to your loved one. I particularly liked the way they were organized throughout the book, and summarized at the end. And they work! I checked off the ones I felt I needed most to talk to my 92 year old mother, and re-read them before I went to visit her. This book made our visit happier and much more harmonious. If I could give it 6 stars, I would.

Connecting the Dots
I heard that it was a good book for me to start learning about alzheimers. Good ideals and was helpful for me to know what lies ahead for my husband.

A great aid for anyone dealing with anyone with Alzheimer's
Dr. London's book provides an unusual combination of scholarly research, concrete advice, and heartwarming stories, in a very readable format. She clearly has a lot of experience with this population and shares it in a very user-friendly manner. This book is suitable for both people who are caring for loved ones who suffer from dementia, as well as professionals who deal with this population and their families. It provides an understanding of the condition and the various problems surrounding it, as well as easy to follow tips on how to best manage.

Some dots were left off the page
Author did not address moderate Alzheimer's patients' symptoms. The issues discussed were fine and somewhat helpful. I would have preferred a wider range of symptoms covered.

My mother is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's disease. I wish I would have read this book about three years ago, it would've helped me make her life more comfortable. But even in her advanced stages the book still offers plenty of information for me to continue to help her.
