Applied Mathematics: A Very Short Introduction

A well written book full of interesting insights and humor. The authors touches on many topics relating to applied mathematics and presents them very clearly, highly recommended !! Thank you Dr. Goriely, this little book reinforced my intention of pursuing studies in applied mathematics.

As a student in Applied Mathematics, I always found it difficult to explain what is Applied Mathematics when ever I am asked. My conversations don’t go further after I say Applied Mathematics. This book gives me a broad understanding of how what I am studying relates to other fields. Now I can suggest that they read this book as an answer to what is Applied Mathematics.

Emphasis on the word "short"

Take a break from those YouTube math videos and buy this book. At $7.50 for the Kindle edition, it’s cheaper than a banana and a bottle of water at LAX. You'd think Applied Mathematics would be an ideal topic for one of the Very Short Introduction series, but this book is too superficial. Show us some more examples rather that just philosophizing about how great differential equations and combinatorics are.

This book is easy to read and the subject matter is put across in such a way that it is easy to understand and makes you want to dig deeper.

The author points out early on that the subject is difficult to define. Perhaps that is because it's the applications themselves which provide a circumstantial flavour to the subject: In a sense each new application modifies the meaning of applied mathematics. In any case, the author provides a number of examples of where the math is applied with how and why. Some of the more amplified examples are involved with interesting topics in current research. Besides, who can resist a book whose chapters begin with epigraphs courtesy of the Marx Brothers' wit and wisdom.

I've reallty enjoy this book: specific, very well structured and encouraging. Highly recommended!

Excellent concise overview of the role and development of applied mathematics including good application examples
