good winch

Just received yesterday, so far so good. Tested for function only with no load to be sure. Got this winch to load/unload my Westinghouse portable 9500watt generator into shed I built for it. Getting prepared for hurricane season... Next week, I'll attempt to winch it up into the shed, which is @6" off the ground using a pair of 38" steel ramps... Forgot to video but, it managed to pull the generator up the ramp o.k. I "pulsed it" on/off to avoid over working and possibly overheating. I was bit doubtful if the "rope" that it came with was capable of pulling the loaded generator ful of fuel...well, it did fine.

I have purchased several winches. I like this one for my application because of the cable attached control box. At first, thought the control box was somewhat big but using it, was good. The control buttons were comfortable and positive. Seamless operation, not real loud. This product is well built.

My problem with this wench is that the instruction manual that comes with it is TERRIBLE. The wiring schematic in the manual leaves out several of the electrical wires that come out of the wench and control box, making it difficult and time consuming to figure out on your own. I am returning the wench and have ordered a different one, where the wiring schematic is included in the product description and matches the wench I am replacing.

I love the product and the price. But my concern is that the bracket that was sent with the winch doesn’t have holes that line up with the winch. You would think it would bolt right up with the winch! Makes no sense to me. I could understand that the holes don’t line up with the 4wheeler. It made the install a little more difficult.

Works so far

First, let me say this is a well built winch. A little bit of ingenuity may be needed on the purchaser's part in order to mount the winch on some ATV's, but isn't that half the fun of any project? Would like to address what seems like the main issue brought up in low rated reviews. It seems to revolve around lower pulling ability than advertised. All winches are rated when the rope, or cable, is only wrapped a single layer. For instance, the 2,500 lb winch I am reviewing, only pulls that much when the rope is wrapping on the drum for the first layer. Also, to pull that much, it needs to draw 120 amps at 12 volts (which our ATV's cannot begin to supply by themselves). Second layer, rated for 1980 pounds. Third, 1640 pounds. Fourth layer, 1400 pounds. Finally, keep in mind this is a winch and not a hoist. It is not designed to lift a load (no true brake to hold the suspended load), plus, it is not designed to be used to pull something behind a vehicle. The gear train is taking the entire braking load and will most likely fail under a shock load when used as a hoist. Not getting after anybody, just wanting to clarify a couple of points.
