Reliable Suture Practice Kit That Helps Me Refresh Old Skills and Regain Some Dexterity
I was a medic in the Army in the years before I went to med school and one of the many skills medics learn is suturing for lacerations, some types of punctures, and incisions NOT done on purpose. Like most busy medics I was good at it so by the time I went to school I had a jump on my peers. In my class of 123 there were two other Army medics and one ex-Navy Corpsman, and we all were technically proficient at skills our classmates would not learn for more than two years.Suturing is a learned skill that must be practiced regularly to maintain your ability and ordering this complete suture practice kit with mixed suture materials is an excellent way to practice tying the many and varied suture knots used in the ER and OR. But I am now retired and my opportunities to suture these days have been limited to accidents on dive boats far out to sea and trussing up the occasional turkey during the holidays. My reason for ordering this SUTURE PRACTICE KIT is to try to regain some dexterity in my arthritic fingers and hands. Few things require MORE nimble fingers and hand dexterity than surgical knot tying. The repetitive actions of mattress sutures and the motions needed to throw ONE-HAND and TWO-HAND knots will provide me exactly the kind of exercise my hands need as I get older and more sedentary. The actions involved in my target training knots allow me to progress (or not) at a pace I can tolerate over time. This is a case of “Every Little Bit Helps” as I try to reclaim some dexterity for my obsession hobby, WATCHMAKING. Reassembling a mechanical watch with 200 tiny parts and exact tolerances is ALL Hand-Eye work, usually using magnifier glasses or an eye loupe. But stiff, recalcitrant fingers and hands with too little circulation makes progress slow and seldom successful. Practicing my favorite old suture ties will provide some relief from the pain and stiffness AND improve both circulation and dexterity...my PCP and other of my Docs agree. My pragmatic cardiologist said: “Yeah, sure. What could it hurt?”And I agree completely! Now, about the excellent set of suture tools included in this kit. The kit has short Iris scissors, a needle holder, toothed tissue forceps, a curved hemostat, a standard No. 3 scalpel handle with 6 blades (#11 and #22), 12 mixed silk, nylon, polypropylene, and polyester sutures, and a very nice tan leather zippered pouch. It is a thoughtfully complete kit with suture materials that require more precise ties as you perfect your skill. The kit is perfect for the intended audience of med students, veterinary students, NP students, and maybe some Army Medics and Navy Corpsmen who want to cultivate their skill. If you are shopping for any of these students, please look on AMAZON for a KNOT TYING BOARD to go with this kit. They provide the holds and tiebacks and line bracing that mimic actual suturing and would be a welcome addition to this kit by ANY of the prospective recipients. AMAZON sells one from ARTAGIA Med that is an excellent choice for new or experienced Docs and will help get you up to speed quickly.GOOD KNOTS TO ALL OF US!Thanks, AMAZON!Mark in North Carolina

Good assortment of basic tools and commonly used sutures
Nicely organized "practice" kit but all the sutures were sterile and in-date so definitely good to have around. Great price for the tools and sutures you get and everything was very acceptable quality.

Nice assortment of tools to learn with
I got this to teach myself how to do stiches in an emergency. This is a great kit with plenty of different thread configurations to try. This is only for practice and is clearly labled as such, so keep your expectations to this being a practice tool. I would recommend, this is a great kit for learning.

Learn to suture and add to your first aid/emergency supplies...
Glad to have this, I'm not in the medical field- but I have kids and am a worrier... So I bought this, a silicone suture practice kit and have watched countless videos and have begun to practice. I don't hope to ever actually need to use this but having the practical knowledge and the supplies could make the difference in a terrible situation if for some reason we're unable to get medical help quickly enough. As I'm not in the medical field I can't speak to the durability or quality of these- but they would suffice in our situation- as any level of preparedness is better than none. I have a friend who has autoclaved these in a storage bag and I have it in a mylar bag with an O2 absorber- so it might not be perfectly sterile if I ever needed it, but it's better than I could get with just alcohol or flame.
