Some of the comments mention modifications (drilling a hole) are required for a flush fit when using with the Anova circulator. True or not true?

True. In order to get a secure attachment fit the circulator, you need to cut a small notch (about the size of the tip of a thumb) in the lip that goes around the edge of the box. Otherwise there is a risk of the unit vibrating loose.

12x18x9 inches comes out to be 1,944 cu in, which translates into 8.4 gal. I don't see how this item can be 1.75 gal.?

12 x 18 inches is correct for the top; the bottom dimensions are 8 x 14 inches and the tub is 9 inches deep. Nobody has the volume right here: by using 2 quart measures, I got 14 quarts (3.5 gals.) to the 'sous vide' mark and 18 quarts (4.5 gals.) to the top (with no slop and 1/4 inch to spare.)

Can this be placed on a counter for sous vide, or should I put something underneath it to keep from discoloring the counter?

I have used it exclusively for sous vide on my counter top and have had no problems. There are actually ridges on the bottom of the box that keep it from sitting flush on the counter and allows for airflow. Works perfectly.
