The stories are very concise, yet, not too dumbed down or simplified like so many other abridged versions for children, hence a good eloquent writing style is maintained throughout which I very much appreciate. Every story has an introductory cast of characters page followed by a famous quote from the play before the story begins, which is extremely helpful in setting the tone for young readers. I read the Shakespeare stories edition by E.Nesbit as a child and even though that is a very good and probably best story edition of Shakespeare available, when I read it at 10 yrs of age, I really longed for illustrations to help me catch the mood and imagine the premise of each story better. I so wish I had this illustrated version to read at that age, I would have thoroughly enjoyed this book as a child. The illustrations are in a particular folkish style (don't know if that is an apt word to describe it) with very vibrant colors, that does catch the eye as being unique after seeing the disneyish type of illustrations time and again in contemporary children's books. The more important point is, the tales are adorned with illustrations generously which would be a very helpful feature for elementary school age children. Overall, a very good illustrated and abridged Shakespeare edition for children. Would not advice for below 8 as it would be difficult to fully experience and assimilate the themes earlier than 8, even for children who are avid readers, they are not going to retain much if they experience this book any younger than 8. Highly recommend for upper elementary and middle school age - 9 to13. Update - My son who has always been an advanced reader, is immensely enjoying this book at the moment as a 6th grader, age 11. Review: great intro to Shakespeare for young readers - Our 7-year-old daughter loves reading. We wanted to introduce her to classics, such as Shakespeare. The way that the book summarizes and simply Shakespeare for young readers is just perfect. The introduction to the main characters before each story and the beautiful visuals also helps the young reader comprehend the stories. Our daughter loves it and already read it twice.

Love this literature!
As a retired English professor, I am always looking for ways to share good age-appropriate literature with my grandchildren. This Shakespeare collection is impressive. The content, illustrations, and efforts to “be true” to the Bard are all reasons to get this book.

No regrets!
Beautiful way to introduce Shakespeare. We are also studying poetry, so I like to read some excerpts from the actual stories so my 10yo can hear the iambic pentameter and get the real feel of Shakespeare. This book is great for telling the complicated stories so the kids can follow what is happening and pick up bits of metaphor here and there. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous!

Great book for any age
My 13 y/o son read the book within a week, that means is approved for even teens. Now we're watching short films in YouTube and he goes along with the book making sure is covering the story well.

Perfect addition to our library!
I bought to read to my kids for homeschool lesson in literature (ages 4,5 and 11). My younger were interested for about 5 minutes (I had to keep explaining what they meant) but to my surprise my 11 year old affluent reader LOVED the stories. I read her Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet and she asked to take the book to read more herself. She loves the “explanation of cast” at the beginning of each story. Helps her follow along in the story the book is very well written, short enough to engage the reader (well older reader) but short enough to be understandable! She loves it so much she asked for the full length version.

Nice Pictures!
My son is 3 and loves words. He kept begging me to read a copy of A Midsummer Nights Dream that I had lying around. I can't even read It! I tried. It was boring. Hamlet is so much more exciting. Anyway, I got this book instead. He has no idea what we are reading but he loves it anyway. He keeps asking for us to re- read a Midsummers Night Dream. He loves the pictures. I am enjoying it too!

I was browsing for a present for a friend when I stumbled across this Little gem. It looked lovely in the pictures. When it arrived yesterday, it was even better than in the photos. The illustrations are delightful, with the opening page to each play containing drawings of each character and who they are. The stories are rewritten in a style that is accessible to older independent readers, but is also appropriate for read-alouds with younger children or less confident readers. Of the Shakespeare books for children that I've bought over the years, this is my favourite.

Absolutely gorgeous book. The stories have been summarized enough for kids to understand without loosing too much of the actual plot and the illustrations are beautifully done. Have rebought this as a gift.

10 and 8 year olds. Neatest part: they knock socks off teachers and other adults with their Shakespeare knowledge. It’s hilarious to watch.
