How to get a PhD: a handbook for students and their supervisors

Good substance, slightly disappointing quality of edition
It is a good book, interesting to read, loads of good information. Delivered quickly. The only little problem is that it is a paperback and not a hard cover so not so easy to keep it open on the needed page and also gets a very used look quickly. But one should expect it from a paperback in any case.

Surprisingly helpful
A professor assigned this book, and I thought she was crazy. But once I started reading it, I found it very useful. I will probably revisit this book throughout my schooling and will definitely make the people in my support structure read it too.

very useful for prospective PhD students too!
I read this book in just a week! I couldn't put it away! It is very well structured and takes into account students, supervisors and universities perspectives. It gave a solid foundation so I can avoid all the pitfalls in my future doctorate.

It helps me a lot!
As I am in a PhD program the book helped me to see things that I wasn't seeing. I recommend it for everyone that is in academia in a doctoral program.

Satisfied
Very nice, it is exactly the book my supervisor suggested for me. If you have hardcover copy can be better, I don't like soft covet copy.

Easy to absorb but not always that pertinent to PhD ...
Easy to absorb but not always that pertinent to PhD workings in New Zealand, I don't think. Quite repetitive at times but interesting nonetheless. There are many useful tips especially regarding the different types of research. It is a very useful book to dip into from time to time.

Average explanation...
Well the book is good about the basic con what to take into consideration when preparing for a Ph.D , but in the end will depend on many factors if in the end the ph.D can be achieved or not.

A personal insight from student and supervisor
I purchased this book for my current PhD student because I had used an earlier edition for my own PhD in the 1990s.It is helpful to a supervisor because it provides a particular insight into the process of gaining a PhD. Particularly valuable is its insistence that the communication between supervisor and student needs to be regular and comprehensive to cement an effective relationship and successful development of the student's career. It should take more account of electronic communication, which facilitates daily communication (and a "Good night" message to indicate that work is finished for the day!), but also requires a warning that the internet is only a starting point and requires supplementing with scholarly references.

Helped me get accepted for a PhD
The University Head of Department advised me to read this book when I enquired about doing a PhD. I found it useful and quoted from it at the interview which showed the panel I had really thought about what it means to do a PhD. I also drew on information from the book in some of my answers, for example what qualities are needed to complete a PhD. I was offered a place, I think the book helped.

Useful for people considering a PhD
If you are considering whether to do a PhD and need some basic information, this book provides a good guide to the process. It is easy to read and is divided into sections so that you can pick out the relevant parts. Everything is covered from useful websites to how to construct and plan your PhD.
