The Textbook of Taekwondo Poomsae : With DVD

I bought the Textbook of Taekwondo Poomsae and its accompanying DVD for my 14 year old son who is a red belt in TKD. He has been studying the forms in the book and DVD and think they are a great way to pick up some of the finer points in the forms he already knows and is currently learning. He is also having fun trying some of the higher black belt forms just to see what will be coming in the future, and he plans to use it to help him design creative forms for competition. He says he thinks it is really useful and highly recommends it.

Nice. A requirement for updating your taekwondo.

The book is basically a subset of the kukkiwon manual, obviously the poomsae section without the boonhae (application) portion. Good detail, good reference.The DVD is a nice touch but not very useful. Just videos of different persons running through all of the official WTF forms in some artistic settings (temples, courtyards, mountains) with narration about the meanings and maybe some histories of the forms, etc. No detail description and the camera constantly pans and zooms for artistic effect. Not very useful for reference.Overall, since the DVD is not all that useful, I think anyone serious about getting a poomsae reference will have much better luck just getting the kukkiwon manual.

Despite the name "with DVD", not all sellers provide a DVD with the book. I had to return the initial purchase for a refund and an waiting for another seller to actually provide a copy with the DVD. As far as the book is concerned, it is a definitive guide to Poomsae, so is invaluable. However, subtleties in the poomsae are constantly being changed so any book is at best a snapshot of the poomsae at the moment.
