I first read this set back in the late 1980s while in college, and I've long wanted to own a set for myself. With the recent discovery of a possible actual portrait photograph of him, I happily purchased a set to refresh my knowledge of van Gogh, who has long been my favorite artist. This collection is unique in the art world, starting when he was about 17 -- well before he started on his career as a painter -- and continues on until his death. It offers an infinitely fascinating peek into his motivations and his thought process.It is also infinitely heartbreaking to read, since, as all personal letters, van Gogh never conceived of having such fame that all his personal thoughts to his beloved brother would be seen and read by people all over the world. Reading such things as Vincent asking Theo for some money so he can buy some new underwear, because his current set is falling apart, makes me feel like an eavesdropper -- how hard it must have been for him to write it, and how embarassed he would feel to know others can read it so easily. Such inimate things happen over and over again in this collection.If you are fascinated by the creative process, by van Gogh, or are a student of art history, this collection is for you. It is a testament to Theo's belief in his brother that he saved all these letters, and that he helped fund his brother's passion for painting for ten years. This collection is beautiful, and well worth the price.

Haven’t finished reading this set yet, but I can comment on the condition and speed of delivery. Both were excellent. I’ve been wanting to read Vincent’s letters for many years and am finally doing it! I’m still at the point just before he answers his true destiny and starts to study painting. It is interesting how hints of his future are interwoven in his twenties before they burst into bloom.

This set came on time and is in pristine condition. I am following Van Gogh's life, thoughts, observations and work with these letters.One discovers that he was an exceptionally observant person and loves all the nuances of nature, from a storm to a sunset to a snowy night. One must be able to "see" in order to produce fine art and one must be able to "feel" what they are observing. Further, with Van Gogh's concluding philosophy of life which became his ultimate religion "one must love all things well." If you do that, one cannot harm anyone or anything. He is "Jesus-like" in that respect, which surpasses all organized religions..

They are meeting my expectations and beyond them. These are a must for anyone who wants the truth about vincent van gogh. Too many opinions and peoples own conclusions about his and theos and his families lives are out there to read etc. These letters reveal the real facts concerning them most importantly vincent himself. Very insightful!

I bought this three book set of Vincent van Gogh's letters here on Amazon. I've had an interest in van Gogh for a long time and discovered this set. This was like walking into a room and turning the lights on it as given great insight into the artist.My set is the first edition and for a set of books that are fifty seven years old. Well the are as new I couldn't be happier.

I love this set of his letters. I've read the 'Dear Theo' collection several times and it provides a more contained focused window. This version is much wider and more eclectic with much more content. It is going to take some time to get through but i am really enjoying the little visit with Vincent I am having every evening.

The books came in exactly as expected. They were delivered earlier than the system stated for an arrival date. Condition was gently used, (as expected), but in really great shape! Very satisfied with the quality and the price. Would not hesitate to order from this organization again.
