Lots of owl data, great photos, could be better organized
This is a beautiful book with a tremendous amount of research but not what I was hoping for. I purchased the book because of the title, “Owls of the World, A Photographic Guide”. While it does do exactly that and does it well, I misunderstood it to mean, “A Photographer’s Guide.”The book has very good photography of the owls and it must have been quite a challenge to source those photos, kudos to the author. My complaint is the organization of the book. If one is not an owl expert they have to be willing to scroll through the entire book trying to visually spot the owl they seek. As someone new to owls and trying to learn about which owls could be found in any particular area or region, I was hoping to be able to not only scan through the photos but also be able to look through a listing, an index or chart that would aid in locating owls whose name you did not know.I took off one start because am surprised and disappointed that knowing there was so much data to share, that would be unfamiliar to many (Taxonomy, Species and subspecies) there wasn’t at minimum a secondary or even tertiary way to help wade through such voluminous data such as search by region or climate. Of course, this may not be an easy task but given the fact that the book does list things like habitat, geographical variation and status & distribution, it would seem that a chart or list could be included that would aid in the location or narrowing of locations.ConclusionOverall, a very good book on owls with photos and information that help to identify popular and lesser known owls but it does so only a linear fashion. Should you NOT know what you are looking for, I do not see how you can easily find what you seek in a non-linear fashion or method.

Perfect for any owl lover no matter the age.
My 1 year old son loves owls. He has a lot of owl toys that he loves to play with. So I got this book for him to "read." There are so many great pictures of owls in here. He will sit there and "read" his owl book and will just look over all the pictures of owls in there. The descriptions in the book are great as well. While he is looking at all the pictures I can check out what they have to say about rock eagle owls. Such in depth detail about each breed of owl. Perfect for any owl lover, no matter what age they happen to be.

A very beautiful book, with excellent print quality
A very beautiful book, with excellent print quality, paper first class. Very similar to Woodpeckers of the world in format,I'll write the same about it.Texts and maps are concise with good information. Could be useful maps would have added the political division for a greater understanding of the area, not to see the country borders a little difficult to know where species are distributed. The photos in general are great, especially the most famous or distributed species; however rare species living in sparsely populated areas, especially the forests have pictures that are not the best or absent, but I'm an amateur wildlife photographer and I understand the difficulty of obtaining them at those sites. In short, highly recommended a book for lovers of birds, especially if you have a preference for owls

It's overpriced not worth getting.
A lot of the photos are missing there is only descriptions . As well as photos of dead owls. A book that will not be used by me. It's not worth the money Author was very lazy in my opinion wii be giving it away not worth the paper It's written on.

Owls of the World- A photographic Guide: Second edition
As a lover of owls since childhood, I have always been on the lookout for the ultimate book on the subject. Look no further , this is it. 528 pages crammed with stunning photographs and all the information you need to know about owls. The photographs are all the more amazing due to the obvious difficulty in capturing these images in the wild and Heimo Mikkola is a master at doing just that..The text is equal to the standard of the photographs and I cannot fault it. This book contains everything one wishes to know about owls, including folklore and is indeed a book for all the owl lovers of the world.
