Q: Does this work shimano sw-7971 dura ace di2 tt bar end shifters?

I used this on a Trek 5.9 with dura ace. Had Trek install and it has worked great. No Problems

Q: is a battery included?

This product does not include a battery. It needs to be plugged into the DI2 battery that sits in the seat post/frame.

Q: Is this version backwards compatible with the Ultegra 6870?

Yes. It has to be matched with another Shimano 11 speed Di2 rear derailleur. In my case, I had 10 speed 6700 Di2 and had to replace both front and rear together. Should also work with Dura Ace 9000+ rear. I believe the syncro shift functionality requires a certain minimum battery electronics that may or may not be on 6800 bike.
