wonderful book. sir david attenborough has such an engaging writing style, i can't put it down!! also bought his private life of plants book, which i will read next. highly recommend!!

We have created a crisis, we must protect what is left. David tells us such amazing details of evolutionary aspects of the species, its truly fascinating, now lets protect our home.

I loved the pictures in this book. They are truly awesome.The book covers the story of life from the beginning to now. I would recommend it to everyone who is interested in life on this planet.

The voice of David Attenborough takes you on a journey through the billions of years of evolutionary history of life on earth. Simply incredible.

Classic book.

The audible version, read by Sir David Attenborough, is just wonderful. We put it on with a 30 min sleep timer at bedtime, and the next night rewind to the part we both can remember before we fell asleep. When the world seems to be falling apart and there’s so much to worry about, it’s nice to zoom out and get some 100 million + years of perspective. Would give it more start if I could.

I have been a observer and enthusiast of Nature through 80 yeast of my life, and have passionetely collected a library of great books,But David Attenborrough's book eclipses them all. His language is engaging, his knowledge is profound.But most of all he has a manner of emphazising the things, processes and driving forces that resulted in surrounding us with the spectacular evidence of life that we are able to enjoy - as long as we don't continue to trash it!I love it as a book, but I have particularly great fun reading it by my computer, were I can, whenever he mentions a species or a process that I am not familiar with, I can find it in Google, Google Images, on Youtube or Google Earth. This slows down the reading speed, but improves the insights and understanding tremendously!And, I must say, there is a rare book, where I do feel that I learn 2 or 3 things, which I consider important on every and absolutely every page!I cannot recommend this book highly enough to any nature enthusiast, and especially to all who would like to become one!

I can't add anything new to the glowing tributes given to this book. It's a classic even 40 years later.Let me give you a suggestion on the edition. Go for the hardcover and avoid the puny paperback which is pathetic.So do yourself a favour and pick up this 40th anniversary Hardcover edition. It's huge and heavy with glossy paper which makes the photographs really stand out.Just wonderful to hold and read. Amazing. Absolutely perfect.
