Does the film need to be completely dry before storing?

No you do not need to dry the film before winding it. That is part of how FilmGuard works. It will slowly evaporate over a couple of years’ time.

will this product clean up 50 year old slides ?

Yes it will. A very tiny amount goes a LONG way. The product was originally designed to clean and lubricate cinema motion picture film, so for slides we would recommend you purchase the smaller 16z size bottle as you would likely never go through the larger standard size bottle working with slides.
