Exquisite detail, high quality & good packaging
My sister brought one of these Chess sets back from her trip to Scotland and I had to have one. Luckily I found one here on Amazon. The Chess pieces are so fantastic with exquisite detail plus they’re well made. You don’t want to be rough with them I’m sure but you also don’t have to live in fear that a piece may fall over and life as this Chess set knows it will be over. We’ve accidentally knocked a few over here and there as we play and have had no problems. They’re sturdier than I expected. The set comes packaged in a classic black box with a foam insert designed to hold all the pieces. The box has a silver print on the lid with a simple design and the logo of National Museums Scotland along with the name of this particular set, the Lewis Chess Men Chess set. The packaging protected the set during shipping perfectly and I keep it around to store the pieces in when we don’t have them out for playing or display. The price tag is substantial, but I think it’s worth it for the quality, the size, the detailed design, and the unique story that goes along with this type of reproduction Chess set.We have this Chess set out on our game table ready to play at all times and adding a touch of history and whimsy to the front room. I love the look of the set. I love the history behind the design. And I love playing chess with these reproductions. This Chess set makes a great addition for chess fans and game lovers, as well as those looking to add a practical and fun piece of room decor that really brings something special to a space.I recommend buying it for yourself or gifting it to someone you think highly of. I have no regrets.

I searched long and hard for the perfect set of Lewis chessmen
I searched long and hard for the perfect set of Lewis chessmen, and i constantly found myself returning to this exact set. The pieces come in a wonderful black box with some high-density foam to lock them into place.Pieces themselves: No dif. in details between the 4 knights, 4 bishops, and 4 rooks besides the colors. Pawns have about 2 or 3 dif. celtic designs on them and they are very smooth and sturdy. Every piece feels evenly sanded out and there are no rough parts (I thought the king's chest would be rough due to the photo)NOW WE TALK ABOUT THE WEIGHT!! the weight is damn near perfect! I love grabbing a handful of pawns and shaking them around in my hand. the clinky-clank noises that arise from the contact between the pieces is music to my ears.Questions you might have that i can answer:1)are the bishops sitting? NO but they still look awesome2) I just don't know if they will be heavy enough?!?!: YES THEY WILL BE trust me. i'm picky.3) Yes, You need to make your own chess board or buy one. i made one from cardboard ,tape, sharpy, and paper and it works brilliantly haha.4) Yes they will last you a lifetime. i dropped the queen and king first time i set them up and they reacted as if they were your favorite rocks landing on the ground. (No harm done)5) They are worth it. only 280 (including shipping) that was only 2 nights of work for me as a server. fork up the cash and you will be stoked if you can find anyone to play with.Very happy with this purchase and I don't regret this choice one bit.

Absolutely Gorgeous!
This was my big present for Christmas. I've played chess since grade school. I always loved the Renaissance style chessmen, but when I saw this set on Amazon and read the history behind it, I had to have it. The set is made in the United Kingdom and is the official set of the Scottish National Museum. The pieces are 3-D laser copies in about 3/4ths scale of the actual 11 pieces in the Scottish collection. That said, the knights match each other, as do the bishops, rooks, kings and queens. There may be some minor variations in the "pitting and patina" which give each piece some unique character. The kings are over 3" tall and the base about 2 inches wide. I'm glad I got a chessboard with 2-1/4 inch squares, but be advised this is a large chessboard layout and requires almost 2 square feet of space. These Lewis chessmen are robustly cast in heavy resin and have black felt bottoms. The pawns are carved on both sides and have different patterns on each, and they are canted off vertical differently, again giving each one unique character. The set came in a beautiful box, securely packaged and marked as the official set of the Scottish National Museum, made in the U.K. An heirloom set I will proudly display.

beautiful, solid, excellent
This is by far my favorite chess set - its very solid, the pieces are heavy and durable (other than a king that was eaten by a husky, but they can eat bricks so that's not a knock on the quality of these chess pieces). What is most impressive though is how beautiful and interesting the pieces are while still being totally functional. In addition, the history is fascinating and well worth learning about. Requires a large chessboard as these are big pieces. Also, the box and packaging are well made and somehow beautiful as well. The care and attention are really outstanding.A board that works well with these pieces is: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PRAE2S4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
