what's the difference between this and the Sony 4k player that's £120 cheaper ?

Just look at the specs … usually they offer some additional gimmicks. The x800 has Bluetooth, build in WiFi, high quality sound decoding, decoding the HD sound formats, plays far more file formats, has more connection opportunities, has more than 2 channel sound decoding, has HDR upscaling. The x800 is a higher end model … better quality, more features … but oddly enough no display. If you want even more quality and performance, check out 1000£ models … despite higher end model, the x800 is fairly cheap build for a higher end model.

Is this an amplifier in its own right? Can I connect hard wired speakers to it

Nope! You need to send the audio to an amplified device such as a sound bar. To make the most of its output you need a decent av amp and surround speakers

Does it upscale dvd (as good as the bdp-s6700 )and remember last play points on all disk formats ?
