Q: how accurate is the thermometer? I've used one of these types before in my breville and it gave the wrong temperature of the inside of the oven.

The only way to make sure a thermometer is accurate is to calibrate it. This is done by boiling water and using the thermometer to test the water. If the thing reads 121 degrees, it is accurate. If not, then it needs to be calibrated...that is, the dial needs to be rotated in relation to the dial so it reads 212 degrees. From what I see, most dial type oven thermometers are no longer manufactered with a small nut on the back to allow calibration. Find an old one at a yeard sale and you might be able to.

Q: The description says this thermometer is over 6" tall. That sounds rather large, can anyone confirm?

The 6 inch measurement is for the display card it is attached to. This is typical for Amazon descriptions for items of this kind. As stated in other answers, the thermometer itself is 3.5 inches tall

Q: I'm looking at the picture...why is 0c almost lined up with 30f, shouldn't it be 32f, which it has a perfect mark for?

I received two of the refrigerator thermometers on 3/12/22 and 32F is lined up precisely with 0C. Evidently it's been fixed.

Q: Is there Mercury in this thermometer?

No. It has a steel spring inside.
